Far Hills Speaker Series: The Classic Architecture of Oakwood

THe Oakwood Historical SocietyThe Oakwood Historical Society in partnership with the Library is pleased to present another edition of the Far Hills Speaker Series- The Classic Architecture of Oakwood. This program is designed to raise awareness and appreciation of Oakwood’s architecture. We will look at some of Oakwood’s well-preserved homes and public buildings representing the best of 20th Century architecture in America and a brief history behind a few of those residences. 

The Classic Architecture of Oakwood is presented by President of the Oakwood Historical Society, Mark W. Risley. Risley has been on the board of The Oakwood Historical Society since 2006. He is past co-chair of the former Oakwood Preservation Trust and has also served on the steering committee for events commemorating the centennial of Dayton’s Great Flood of 1913. He is a retired airline flight operations coordinator, a history advocate and is involved in local independent film production.

Far Hills Speaker Series: Boulders, Bedrock, & Brewing Water

The Oakwood Historical SocietyThe Oakwood Historical Society in partnership with the Library is pleased to present another edition of the Far Hills Speaker Series- Boulders, Bedrock, and Brewing Water: How Local Geology has Influenced the History of Oakwood and the Surrounding Area. This presentation addresses the bedrock geology of this area and its use in Oakwood, local quarrying history and its link to the DL&C Railroad, Rubicon Creek, the 1913 Flood, the glacial geology of this area, the significance of local ground and surface water, and how these geologic topics relate to some of the people, places, and things that are part of Oakwood's history.

Dr. David Schmidt will present this interesting history. Schmidt is the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Wright State University. He received his PhD from The Ohio State University and much of his research has focused on local geology and paleontology. Dr. Schmidt is a lifelong resident of the south Dayton area.
