The Oakwood Inclusion Coalition and Wright Library are hosting a presentation on refugee resettlement in the Dayton area on Wednesday, June 29 at 7 pm, in the library's Community Room. We'd like to invite you all to join us at this special event as local experts convene to inform the community about this fascinating topic.
As millions of Ukrainians have left their homes to escape violence, the global media have overwhelmingly responded with support and sympathy. Many of us here in the Dayton area long to be able to reach out to the migrants we see on television and speed their journey to safety. But did you know that Dayton is already home to thousands of refugees from around the world, with more arriving every year? They start out as strangers in a strange land, but they have hope for a new and better life.
Please join us to hear the latest updates on Uniting for Ukraine, the U.S. government's new entry program for people fleeing Ukraine. Learn about the diverse population of refugees who are already in Dayton: where they come from, how they get to Dayton, and how local organizations are helping them learn English, get jobs, enroll in school, and settle into American society. Find out how you can share your skills with Dayton-area groups that connect refugees and new immigrants in our community with legal services, healthcare access, tutoring, transportation, and more.
Sam Bain, Southwest Ohio District Representative for U.S. Senator Rob Portman, will provide an overview of the parolee program for Ukrainians entering the U.S. and how our elected representatives support Ukrainians and refugees from around the world. Laura Roesch, CEO of Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley (the local resettlement agency operating under guidance from the U.S. Department of State), will speak about the services they offer that help refugees gain self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. Representatives from area agencies that offer healthcare access, legal services, and English classes will also present about their work.
